Ambrish is the pen name of Dr. Karnail Singh. He was born in a small village bordering Pakistan in the Gurdaspur district of India's Punjab state. After studying up to 7th standard in schools in nearby villages, he had a stroke of luck in going to Chandigarh for further studies. He completed his school from Sector 23 Government School and pre-medical from Sector 11 Government College there. After that he got ission in M.B.B.S at Government Medical College Amritsar from where he graduated and post-graduated. He had the good fortune of retiring as Principal of his alma mater and Head of the Department of Pediatrics there. His first poem "Evening on a Lake" descended on him as he roamed the banks of Sukhna Lake one fine evening during his pre-medical days in Chandigarh. It was the first sign of his abiding and lifelong love for nature. He started writing in English, experimented a bit in Hindi, but finally settled for his mother-tongue Punjabi, in which he has published 6 collections of poetry and a travelogue, with more books of poems and prose in the offing. In his own words: "I am a quintessential teacher – and student. Everything in this world and universe, multiverse rather, fascinates me beyond words, be it botany or zoology, physics or metaphysics, sociology, astrophysics or quantum physics, anthropology or archeology, history or evolution, and of course the arts, poetry especially. So my favorite television programs are: How the Universe Works, Strip the Cosmos, Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman and their ilk." His deep interest in all the above, clinician's probing eye and analytical mind, spiritual bend of mind, vast repertoire of words and innate felicity of knitting narratives imbue these travelogues with a distinct hue.There are not too many like him in Punjabi literature.
